The long hot spell gripping Ahmedabad was finally gone after the city witnessed moderate rainfall on Sunday.

The rains, which was recorded at 13 mm, were accompanied by strong winds. Maninagar in the South Zone, which received the highest rainfall, recorded a downpour of 33 mm in the early morning hours. Apart from Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhavnagar, Amreli and Rajkot also received moderate rainfall, IMD said. Ninety-seven talukas across 23 districts also received rains early in the morning. The maximum rainfall was recorded at Umbergaon in Valsad.

Foram Shah,a homemaker, said that hopefully, the city will get good rains this year. "I am just glad that the monsoon is finally here. It seemed like the summer would never end. If we get adequate rainfall it will also help solve our water problems," said Shah.

Kusum Desai, a senior citizen, said the rains will give a much-needed respite from the heat. "The rains made me so happy. It was very humid for the last many days and suddenly the weather has turned pleasant. A good rain will also mean good produce for the farmers and cheaper prices for us," said Desai.

The rains, however, brought with it, its own set of troubles. Several areas in Hatkeshwar and Khokhra were inundated with water for some time. Incidents of trees and electricity poles falling down were also reported. At Dharnidhar crossroad the poles holding the CCTV camera panel broke down due to the rain and wind.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 degree Celsius which was four degrees below normal while the minimum temperature was recorded at 23.4 degree Celsius. The Met department has warned of light rains and thundershowers for Monday too. The department has also issued a warning of cyclonic circulations for the south Gujarat and light to moderate rainfall in several places including Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman.

Following the warning, 10 NDRF teams stationed at various places across the state have also been alerted for any eventuality.
