In order to improve employability, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) will now allow their students to do internships for either 15 weeks or a full semester at a corporate firm. The university will also implement a new model curriculum as per the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The Integrated Training and Placement Cell of the GTU had recently organised an HR managers' meet and panel discussion on 'Centralised Recruitment Platform at GTU: Challenges and Opportunities'. A total of 120 delegates, including HR managers of 50 companies, participated in the event. The university will now be conducting centralised placement fairs at zonal centres including Surat and Rajkot.

Officials at GTU said, "We will create a special website for this purpose and will be allowing 10-15 weeks of internship or project in corporate firms to engineering students after the seventh semester. There are 76,000 students in the final year of various engineering courses. This includes 46,000 in BE, 27,000 in Diploma and the rest in ME, BCA, MCA and other streams. Our challenge is to improve employability. For this purpose, new model curriculum has been introduced as per AICTE."

Senior Vice President Dr Jaimin Vasa, GCCI, said: "Make students application-oriented and industry environment-ready to increase their employability. Impetus should be on the personal and holistic development of students through membership of industry associations. Students need to develop values like passion, commitment and integrity, and these should be a fundamental part of the curriculum. Curriculum and syllabus upgradation should be finalised in consultation with industry experts and necessary changes should be made whenever required."

Haresh Chaturvedi, VP (HR), Reliance Industries Ltd, explained how students perform in interviews. He said, "The biggest challenge we are facing is finding candidates with skills in the latest technology every five years, as technologies are changing at a very fast pace. In this situation, many professors are not ready to update their knowledge as per industry requirements. For internship or guest lectures of industry experts, we are ready to help."
