Gujarat: Swine flu cases cross 1,000, death toll touches 50

The state health department said that the three deaths were reported from Bhavnagar, Bharuch, and Kutch.

Swine flu situation in the state seems to be becoming increasingly worrisome. On Wednesday, 82 new cases of swine flu were reported in the state, the highest in a single day this year, taking the total number of cases to more than 1,000, even as three patients succumbed.

The state health department said that the three deaths were reported from Bhavnagar, Bharuch, and Kutch. The number of swine flu deaths in the state since January 1 increased to 50.

The department said that 27 cases were reported from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits, seven from Sabarkantha, and five each from Vadodara city and Amreli.

Four cases each were reported from Bhavnagar city, Surat city, and Dahod, and three each from Anand and Junagadh. Two cases were reported in Ahmedabad district, Rajkot city, Bhavnagar, Narmada and Surat district.

One-one case of the seasonal flu was confirmed in Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Kutch, Morbi, Bharuch, Mehsana, Jamnagar city, Porbandar, and Devbhoomi Dwarka.

With today's numbers, the total number of swine flu cases in the state touched 1,037, of whom 599 patients have recovered, and 388 are under treatment.

Union health ministry data shows that 6,701 swine flu cases were reported in the country as of Monday. Gujarat accounted for the third highest number of cases after Rajasthan and Delhi, while it was second after Rajasthan in terms of deaths.
