Work on Statue of Unity, the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Narmada district, is going on at full steam, and is expected to be completed by October 25, the state government said on Saturday.

The statue, which at 182 metres, will be the world's tallest upon completion, is slated to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. It is being built at a cost of Rs2,989 crore.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani visited the Statue's site on Sadhu Bet near Sardar Sarovar Dam, and reviewed the ongoing work. He was informed that work on the Statue's steel structure would be completed by September 20, bronze work by October 10, and entire finishing work by October 25. Around 86% of the Statue work has been completed so far.

"The work on Statue of Unity will be completed by October 25, much in time before its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," SS Rathore, chairman & managing director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL), told DNA.

The state government said that 1.40 lakh sq metre concrete, 18,500 tonne steel, 70,000 tonne cement, and 2,000 tonne bronze would be used in the Statue's construction. More than 3,000 workers and 300 engineers are working at the site. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani told reporters after reviewing the work that the Statue would be "a world-class monument" and a "fitting tribute for Sardar Patel".

"A number of programmes that will depict the life of Sardar Patel and the work done by him to unite the country will be organised in the run-up to the Statue's dedication," Rupani said.

Besides the Statue, the project will comprise a museum, a 52-room Shresth Bharat Bhavan, research centre, among others. The Statue of Unity project was announced in October 2010 when Narendra Modi was the state's chief minister. The construction work had started in the same month four years later.
