Owing to 9% dip in Class 12 Science state board results, the Science colleges across Gujarat are expecting a huge rush for admissions to various courses. Gujarat University, which began admissions for BSc courses in colleges affiliated to it from May 16 onwards, saw 2100 registrations in just two days.

While one of the main reasons for opting Bsc is less craze for engineering, experts cite a dip in results as a key reason for the rush this year.

Dr Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University, said: "Due to the dip this year, the Science colleges will be packed for admissions. There is also a high probability of those colleges, in which seats go vacant, get full as there is a dip in results. If the results are high, students opt for engineering courses which have higher cut-offs. This time, engineering courses which are not much preferred would go vacant. The first two days of Bsc admissions also witnessed a huge number of registrations from students. Nearly 2,100 students registered and submitted with choice-based filling. This is fairly a good number for 9,000 seats in the state."

"There are a number of reasons for the rush that include less craze for engineering, choice-based college, employment, etc. But the main reason this time will be cut-off. Since engineering colleges have higher cut-offs, students would be opting for BSc courses", said Pragna Vadher, associate professor, Department of Physics, Government Science College.

Father Robert Arockiasamay, principal of St.Xavier's college too felt that there will be a lot of rush this year. "There will certainly be a rush in terms of admissions as the results have witnessed a dip in class 12 results. However, cut-offs will not be reduced. The main cause of rush is also that not many students are opting for engineering courses these days", he said.

60% ENGINEERING SEATS TO GO VACANT

  • With only 38,024 students qualifying for engineering in Class 12 (A group), 60 % degree seats are likely to go vacant.

  • There are 66,059 engineering seats in around 117 colleges and institutes in State.

  • Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) expect cut-off marks to drop by 2% this time owing to dip in results.

  • ACPC officials believe around 42,000 seats are likely to remain vacant in colleges offering degree engineering courses.

DIP IN CLASS 12 RESULTS:

The Gujarat board results of class XII Science this year recorded 9% dip in overall results. There was also 64.5% drop in schools that recorded 100% results. While there were 118 schools last year which had recorded 100% results, the number this year has been fallen to just 42. As far as overall pass percentage is concerned, nearly 9% dip has been witnessed with 72.99% this year as against 81.89% last year. The results that were declared on Thursday revealed that Rajkot topped with 85.03% result whereas Chota Udepur recorded the lowest with 35.64%. The pass percentage of Ahmedabad city was 75.24 whereas the same for Ahmedabad rural was 82.17, Vadodara 75.16 and Surat 78.77.
