The state government on Thursday informed the Gujarat high court that it cannot direct the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to retain the reservation policy in admissions for their various courses.

The government responded to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Kanu Gohil through his advocate Amit Panchal to implement the reservation of 7% to SC, 14% and 27% to ST and OBCs respectively in admissions though Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

MR Chauhan, undersecretary of the legal department, stated in the affidavit that “GNLU is an autonomous and self-financed university established under the provisions of the Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003, and thus is an independent statutory university, not receiving any aid either from the state government or the Central government.”

The affidavit further stated, “The pattern of seat allotment cannot be implemented in the GNLU by comparing with other universities of the state.”
