Gujarat's oldest mental health institute, BM Institute of Mental Health, will engage high school students and college students in a mental health programme. The programme will kick off from today on account of World Mental Health Day, and will reach out to as many colleges and schools throughout the year.

Speaking about the initiative, Madhu Singh, director, BM Institute of Mental Health, said, "This year, the theme of World Mental Health Day is 'Young people and mental health in a changing world'. Hence, we have designed our initiative such that will focus on adolescents and the mental health problems that they deal with.

Throughout the year, we have planned various activities in schools and colleges. Usually our programmes are for all age-groups but this time we are focussing on class 11-12 and college students."

Referring to a report by Bengaluru-based National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) that covered covering 34,802 people across 12 states, Singh said, "The report showed that the lifetime prevalence of mental disorder is 13.7 per cent. Extrapolating the results of the 12 states to entire country would mean at least 150 million Indians are in need of intervention for mental health. The report further stated that about 9.8 million children aged 13-17 are in need of medical intervention with mental disorders prevalent in 7.3 per cent population."

The institute this year will also conduct free mental health screening once a month on its campus located at Ashram road.
