The Ro-Ro Passenger ferry connecting Ghogha and Dahej ports will begin functioning form October 27 onwards. The state government is also exploring similar services from Hazira in Surat, Pipavav, Diu and Kandla among others.

Chetan Contractor, Chairman and Managing Director Indigo Sea Ways Pvt Ltd said that the service that will be operational in the Gulf of Khambhat will be operational in an area that sees the second biggest tidal variations. "The service will provide important and quick connection between Saurashtra and South Gujarat. It will cut down the travelling time from 12 hours to just 1.5 hours," said Contractor.

It should be noted that the Khambhat has tidal variations of more than 11 mts and the currents are more than 4 to 5 nautical miles during the day. The ferry service can carry upto 525 passengers apart from over 60 trucks, 5 to 7 buses and 40 cars. The vessel initially will do two round trips per day and within 6 months will compete upto 6 round trips.

He added that depending on the response, another ferry will be pressed into service. Earlier a high speed passenger ferry service had been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 22 which at present is running at 23% capacity.

Contractor said that the service also plans to tie up with bus operators to utilize the ferry for transporting their passengers at a cost of Rs 350 per passenger for a round trip. "This will save time for the passengers and for the operators it will also mean less fuel consumption among other things," said Contractor.
