Quota leader Hardik Patel, Congress MLAs Lalit Vasoya, Pratap Dudhat and others attempted Jal Samadhi (drowning oneself) on Saturday in Bhadar River near Bhukhi village of Rajkot district. The police detained around 200 people including Hardik and Vasoya, making their attempt futile.

Congress MLA from Dhoraji and former colleague of Hardik Patel in quota stir, Lalit Vasoya, had warned the government saying that if no actions were taken to control the pollution in Bhadar-2 dam reservoir caused by local textile dyeing units through the release of untreated effluents.

Vasoya has also written to the Governor, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, water resource department and hordes of other officials, staged the protest programme on Saturday.

He headed towards the reservoir with Hardik and some 100 people. They were, however,  detained by the local police and released on bail.

“I will take Jal Samadhi again. The BJP government tried to break our agitation, but we all will stay united and Congress will fight for the right of people. We will take up this agitation and that will become more rigorous in the future. Our fight does not stop here as it is better to sacrifice life-fighting against the corrupt system than die by the slow poison,” Vasoya said after release..

“This BJP government is ruthless towards people’s issues and they have no sensitivity. I pleaded with them to solve the issue as people are dying, but they are not taking action.”

Vasoya got support from Hardik Patel and his colleagues in Gujarat assembly. Pratap Dudhat, MLA from Savarkundla said, “We are with people of Dhoraji. Congress will raise people’s voice and will create uproar against the BJP government. They tried to muzzle our voice but we will not surrender.”

Hardik Patel alleged that the industrialist tried to pay bribe for not participating in the programme. “The government belongs to the industrialists. Industrialists are polluting the river by releasing chemicals into it. Before coming here, I was made an offer of Rs 50 lakh by the middlemen of certain people. Two days ago, Lalitbhai (Vasoya) was offered Rs 1 crore,” Hardik said.

No Death By Water

PAAS leader Hardik Patel  said, “As many as 70 people died of cancer and more than 300 people have got skin diseases due to this polluted water. We were freed on bail but the government made all attempts to stop us.”
