Gujarat police busts investment scam, nabs three

The accused had promised very high returns on cash investment from people, around Rs 26 lakh worth of cash was recovered from them

The Sarkhej Police Station on Monday recovered cash amounting to Rs 26 lakh after arresting a gang of three accused of duping people from various parts of the state. The accused were running a sham investment scheme by promising investors higher returns in a short period. A case has been lodged by the police.

The police nabbed the accused after it received a tip-off that the three scamsters were going to pass the Sarkhej crossroad in a car.

Two women, identified as Gayatri Didhawala and Radha Didhawala, and a man identified as Vinod Rathod were aboard the cab and several envelopes with various people's names on them were recovered from the three. The envelopes consisted of cash.

Vinod revealed that a person named Pravin Rathod has been running a money investment scam under which he has promised the investors high returns within ten days' time of the cash investment. Exposing PRavin's modus operandi, Vinod said as per plan, in if a person invests Rs 1 lakh cash in 10 days, he would be promised a return of Rs 1.60 lakh. He revealed that he and Gayatri are Pravin's agents while Radha was an investor herself.

The police nabbed Pravin Rathod from his house and recovered four other similar bags, which contained a total of Rs 26 lakh cash. Pravin, the main accused behind the scam, is believed to have duped over 40 people.

PR Ramani, inspector, Sarkhej Police, said, "A total of Rs 28.50 lakh worth of valuables comprising of cash, car and a gold sword has been recovered. Till now 15 victims have been identified, but we suspect that over 40 people have been duped, which will be clear during further investigation."
