Nine Congress candidates, including leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani and former Union minister Bharatsinh Solanki, and four BJP nominees, filed their nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday, just a day before submission of nominations ends.

Dhanani filed his nomination for Amreli Lok Sabha seat, and will face-off against MP and BJP candidate Naran Kachhadia.

Former union minister Solanki submitted his papers for Anand Lok Sabha on Wednesday. He is pitted against BJP candidate Mitesh Patel, who is an accused in a 2002 riot case, and is also CMD of Laxmi Protein Products, which sells the famous ‘Laxmi’ tur dal.

Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that the party’s candidate from Ahmedabad West Raju Parmar, Surendranagar nominee Soma Patel, and candidate from Mehsana AJ Patel also submitted their nominations for the April 23 electoral battle. MLAs Lalit Vasoya and Lalit Kagathara, who have been fielded by Congress from Porbandar and Rajkot Lok Sabha seats respectively, the party’s Navsari candidate Dharmesh Patel, and Panchmahal candidate VK Khant, also submitted their nominations today.

MLA and BJP’s candidate from Patan Bharatsinh Dabhi and MP and Bardoli seat candidate Prabhu Vasava also filed their nomination papers today. The party’s media coordinator Prashant Vala said that Chhota Udepur seat candidate Geeta Rathwa and Junagadh candidate Rajesh Chudasama also submitted their nominations today.

“Our candidates from Surat, Banaskantha, Mehsana and Ahmedabad East seats will file their nominations on Thursday,” he said.

The BJP is yet to finalise its candidate for Ahmedabad East, while Congress announced Hardik Patel’s aide Geeta Patel as its candidate. MP from the seat Paresh Rawal had announced recently that he would not be contesting in the elections.
