The Narcotics Control Bureau, on Sunday, busted a drug trafficking ring, seizing cannabis (locally known as charas) valued at around Rs 2 crore and arrested six accused. The gang used to operate in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Anand.

The main supplier, identified as Shakeel Shaikh, was arrested from Navapura in Ahmedabad with 4kg cannabis in his car. Four accused identified as Rafik Meman, Javed Gulam Mohammad, Ismail Harun and Mehboob Aslam were arrested from Rajkot with 8.1kg cannabis. A woman, identified as Hanifa Bibi and believed to be a peddler, was also arrested from Petlad in Anand.

NCB Zonal Director Hari Om Gandhi said that in August, they had nabbed a 60-year-old man identified as Iqbal Ibrahim Shaikh with 13kg of cannabis valued at around Rs 2 crore from Shamlaji checkpost in Aravalli district. During interrogation, Shakeel Shaikh’s name was revealed as the main supplier.

Acting on the information, NCB officials started keeping an eye on Shaikh, who is a native of Ghaziabad and currently settled in Virpur.

It was revealed during investigation that Shaikh is one of the main suppliers in the state and used to deliver cannabis, which he sourced from a Kashmir-based dealer, to local drug peddlers in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Anand.

On Saturday, NCB officials got information that Shaikh was going to deliver cannabis to local dealers in Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Anand. They intercepted his car near Navapura and found that his mother, wife and daughter were present in the vehicle. While checking the car, they found 40kg of cannabis in a secret compartment of the car. Shaikh was arrested from the spot and taken to the NCB office. During interrogation, it was revealed that Shaikh had already delivered a consignment to two persons in Rajkot. Regarding the matter, NCB officials informed Rajkot Police who were able to nab the accused identified as Mehboob, Ismail, Rafik Meman and Javed, and recovered 8.1kg of cannabis from them.

Further investigation also revealed that the 4kg cannabis that was recovered from Shaikh’s car was supposed to be delivered to a lady named Hanifa Bibi in Anand, who was then arrested.

“A total of 12.1kg of charas worth Rs 2crore in the international market was recovered from the six accused,” said Hari Om Gandhi.
