Gujarat MPs' income third highest in country

Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat declared the third highest annual income in the country, an analysis of the affidavits submitted along with their election nominations in 2014 shows.

The analysis, carried out by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), showed that the average annual income of 24 MPs from Gujarat was Rs 59.5 lakh, nearly twice the average income of Rs 30.29 lakh of 479 MPs in the country. Forty-two MPs had not declared their income, and were not included in the analysis.

From Gujarat, Junagadh MP Rajesh Chudasama and Sabarkantha MP Dipsinh Rathod, had not declared their income, ADR said in a report. The highest average annual income of Rs 105.9 lakh was declared by 19 MPs from Andhra Pradesh, followed by Rs 68.8 lakh by 15 MPs from Odisha.

Actor and Ahmedabad East MP Paresh Rawal declared annual income of Rs 8.22 crore in his poll affidavit, which was the second highest among all MPs. Rawal, who has announced that he would not be contesting in the upcoming elections, trailed TDP MP Jayadev Galla, who declared income of Rs 16.30 crore. Navsari MP CR Patil reported an annual income of Rs2.86 crore in his affidavit, which was the ninth highest among all MPs included in the analysis.

Kutch MP Vinod Chavda, who has been fielded by the BJP again, reported an annual income of Rs 2.29 lakh in his affidavit, which was the third lowest among the elected MPs.

The ADR analysis showed that two MPs of Goa declared annual income of Rs 5.3 lakh, which was the lowest among all states. The analysis also looked into the educational qualifications of the MPs. It found that 106 MPs, i.e. 22% of the total lawmakers, were graduates, and their annual income was Rs 41.28 lakh. As against this, six 5th pass MPs had annual income of Rs1.41 crore. Five illiterate MPs declared annual income of Rs 75.35 lakh.
