While Akshya Tritiya is considered auspicious for buying assets, a fact lesser known is that the wind pattern on the day is one of the key factors determining how the monsoon will fare during the year. Accordingly, farmers told DNA that the monsoon will not only be late, but also weak. However, experts say that while these conventional wisdom were accurate in the past, increase in pollution, leading to climate change has resulted in the predictions not being as accurate and useful now as it was a few decades ago. Also, while there were many experts till a few years ago, now the level of expertise and the number of experts has fallen.

"The tide was very week today. It means that monsoon will also be week this year. It will also be delayed," said Jayesh Patel, president of Gujarat Khedut Samaj. For people living in coastal areas, the pattern of tide is one of the key indicators of the season. Higher the intensity of tide, heavier will be the rain during the year. "The intensity of the tide and wind are related. Wind was very weak today, which could mean that the rainy season will not be full, but restricted. Normally in south Gujarat, monsoon sets on June 25 and ends in September, but the wind pattern indicates that it may start in July and end in September," said Patel.

However, BK Kikani, former vice chancellor of Junagadh Agriculture University, said that these conventional wisdom were accurate in the past. However, deterioration of environment, leading to climate change, has resulted in inaccuracies in such predictions. "There have been other attempts to predict the monsoon, but inaccuracies have been high, putting a question mark on such predictions," he said. In the past, the Gujarat government had also published calendars to predict the rain, but the actual rainfall did not tally on most occasions, said Kikani.
