In what reveals the poor state of security inside the Sabarmati Central Jail, mobile phones were allegedly seized from the possession of Diamond Power Infrastructure Limited (DPIL) promoters Amit Bhatnagar and Sumit Bhatnagar, and two others at the Sabarmati Jail, officials said today. A charger and a sim card were also recovered from the jail premises.

The Bhatnagar brothers, who are in jail in connection to a bank fraud, are lodged in the High Security Yard of the jail along with Mumbai-based jeweller Birju Salla and Kishorsinh Rathod, son of former MLA Bhavsinh Rathod.

Police said that the mobile phones were recovered during a surprise search on Wednesday at around 8.30 pm. "We recovered two mobiles and four SIM cards from their possession. We also found two hands-free headphones and a memory card," senior jail official Aslam Qureshi said.

The jail authorities registered a complaint regarding the recovery of the phones from the high security area with Ranip police station.

An FIR was lodged against the four accused at Ranip police station under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and under the Prisons Act, Ranip PI JG Patel, said. He said that the Special Operations Group of City Crime Branch will probe how mobile phones found their way into the high-security jail. The jail administration has identified three persons as probable suspects in the case and their names have been already given to police.

The Bhatnagar brothers are behind bars since their arrest in April by the CBI for allegedly defrauding banks to the tune of Rs2,654 crore. Their father Suresh Bhatnagar, who was also arrested in the same case, is out on bail on health grounds.

Mumbai-based jeweller Birju Salla was arrested in October last year for creating a bomb and hijack scare on a domestic flight after putting a hoax note in the aircraft's wash room. He was the first to be put on the 'National No Fly List' earlier this year.

The fourth person Kishorsinh Rathod is in jail after he was arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad in January last year for his alleged involvement in a racket of supplying raw material worth Rs270 crore to prepare banned party drug methamphetamine.
