We walk into a new year with brimming hope that the coming days will be a good road for all of us. Sharing the same note, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited officials said the people will no longer have to suffer from damaged roads as the agency has recently hired a contractor to repait the roads.

Roads in several places have already been fixed. Resurfacing work at places like Vastral Gam, Vastral, Apparel Park and Amraiwadi — where the metro stations will come up — is nearly complete.

"We have tied up with the civic body. GMRC will pay the civic body and the latter will repair the roads by roping in new contractors. Most of the roads have been damaged due to heavy Metro Rail work. Except for utility services, the road work was affected badly," said a senior GMRC official.

Recently, GMRC has hired a contractor for road work and, at many places, the damaged roads are being fixed by them, including patch work.

Road and building committee chairman Ramesh Desai said his ward, Amraiwadi, has been affected by the on-going Metro work. "Most of the roads in Amraiwadi have been damaged and needs immediate repair. Many routes have ben diverted due to the project. We have met the GMRC officials and requested them to expedite the road work," said Desai.

"Earlier, contractors had quoted very high price for tenders of GMRC. After several meetings with the agency officials, we have managed to find a contractor to repair the roads," added Desai. City-based engineer Hitesh Contractor, who is working for the road development project, said the roads that are under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are being repaired.
