A pride of lions is believed to have attacked and killed a 35-year-old man near Mahuva Taluka.

The victim's, identified as Ramabhai Chudasama, half-eaten body was found on the outskirt of Gujarada village by the residents who then informed the forest department.

Forest officials believed that a pride of 10 lions that had been living in a forest patch of 100 hectare area, close to the village, may be responsible for the attack.

Deputy Conservator of Forest (Bhavnagar) Sandeep Kumar said that the victim had been warned the day before the incident about the pride of lions. "In the evening, the victim, who was drunk, was warned by the tracker about the presence of the lions and had warned him against entering that area. He might have gone again at night despite the warnings," said Kumar. He said the forest officials are now trying to get the lions in a cage so that scat analysis can be done.

Officials believe that a female, a sub adult and a cub spotted on the outskirts of the village, which is close to the coast, need to be observed.

"As of now, no one saw the lions attack the victim. The lions' location has been the same, they have not ventured into the village and there has been no change in their behaviour. Usually, when such attacks happen, you can also see a change in the behaviour of the animals," said Kumar. He said only a scat analysis can clearly reveal if the animal was behind the attack.
