An acute shortage of textbooks has hit students in Gujarat, particularly those in Class 12, triggering panic among the pupils and parents ahead of the annual exams. Schools and students are borrowing books from seniors and relying on photocopies to keep up with their studies.

Anisha Shaikh, principal of FD High School for girls, said students have barely four months to prepare for final exams. Books of Geography and English for Urdu medium, and Physics, Chemistry and Biology of other mediums are not available yet, she said. "It is impacting our students as teachers are unable to give homework in the absence of textbooks." Books are supposed to be given to students in a week in a new academic year.

Nitin Pethani, executive president of Gujarat State School Textbook Board (GSSTB), told DNA, "Students and schools can get Class 12 books from our depot in Nirnay Nagar. Shortage of books of Class 6, 7 and 8 will be solved soon."

While Naresh Shah, president of Gujarat Booksellers and Stationers Association, blamed the government saying it delayed the print orders, a bookseller at New CG Road said shops are not keeping a large stock as they will get NCERT books from next year.

Meanwhile, booksellers on Friday said they would stop selling state board textbooks. They are upset at being accused by the GSSTB of selling books at higher price.
