Amdavadis woke up to joy, pouring from the heavens, on Friday. However, the spirit dampened as incessant rains kept pounding the city until afternoon, waterlogging major city arteries and road damages and uprooting trees.

109 pockets waterlogged

The monsoon control room of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) received complaints of water-logging from over 109 pockets.  Almost four inches of waterlogging was witnessed in just five hours of rains, the control room said. Vejalpur, Jodhpur, Bodakdev, Hatkeshwar, Kubernagar, Saijpur, Jivarajpark, Naroda, Manekbag was submerged knee-deep until evening.

Building damaged, walls collapsed

A portion of the wall of a 40-year-old wall building, located on Odhav ring road, collapsed due to rains on Friday moring. A portion of the wall of Virbhadra Society Part 1 in Nava Vadaj had to quickly removed after it tilted.  Near to Dharnidhar Derasar, a portion of over head tank was removed after cracks appeared.

210 trees uprooted

As many as 26 trees were uprooted due to rains near Riverfront. two similar cases were witnesseed in near Kubernagar bridge. Also, a major traffic snarl was witnessed near Law Garden due to the uprooting of a tree. 

Underpasses closed for five hours

All submerged underpasses were closed for four to five hours. Parimal underpass was closed for more than eight hours. All the underpasses were opened for the traffic movement by evening.

Cave-ins and road resettlement

A road was resettled near Shyamal crossroads and traffic movement was interrupted for 30 minutes. “We had fixed a cave-in at that spot just before two week. The stretch was resettled but was fixed within 30 minutes,” said Rushi Pandya, additional city engineer, AMC.A major sinkhole was reported near Makarba road where a car was sucked into it. 

OVER 40 FLIGHTS DELAYED

Flights flying to and from the city were badly hit due to incessant rains that began in the wee hours of Friday. Over 40 flights were delayed causing passengers of various flights stranded for hours at the city airport. Officials at the airport said, “The delay was expected due to rains and in such a weather, passengers should check their flight status before leaving for the airport. We, however, tried to make some arrangements at the terminal area for them.” Flights to Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Cochin, Jaipur, Goa, Mumbai, Ranchi, etc were delayed.
