The intellectually-challenged people will now get certificates from the state government for receiving vocational training. Gujarat has granted permission to Gujarat's oldest institute on mental health, 68-year-old BM Institute of Mental Health, to start government-approved Industrial Training Centre.

Experts in the mental health sector say this is an achievement which will go in a long way in helping such people get employment.

"The institute has been imparting vocational training to this section of society since 1979 under its multi-category workshop. However, we do realize that to help them in getting equal work opportunity in mainstream society, certification from government bodies would be of tremendous help and with that thought, we had approached Department of Employment and Training to grant us permission to start government approved Industrial Training Center," Madhu Singh, director, BM Institute of Mental Health said.

"There are a few ITIs which are admitting persons with disabilities like orthopedically handicapped, visually handicapped or persons with speech and hearing impairments but there has not been any ITC exclusively for persons with intellectual impairment. Hence, the approval for the same "

The institute will commence first batch, of six months, in this month and has got 28 admissions against 30 approved seats. In 2017-18, the institute had got 134 cases of intellectual disability, 136 with a speech problem, 100 with behaviour problem, 72 with development delay, 56 with motor problems, 51 attention deficit hyper disorder among other cases of learning disability, down syndrome, genetic disorder, slow learner and average intelligence. Due to the certification, these people can well fit in at any small scale industry with similar trade they are trained for and also they may enter into startups with family and govt. support as they have additional benefits of micro finance or loans.
