Gujarat Home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja diagnosed with oral cancer, undergoes surgery

Jadeja, 56, got admitted to HCG Cancer Centre on Monday for the surgery. The hospital said that he will remain in ICU for a couple of days.

Home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja underwent surgery at a city hospital on Monday evening after being diagnosed with oral cancer, official sources said. Jadeja, 56, got admitted to HCG Cancer Centre on Monday for the surgery. The hospital said that he will remain in ICU for a couple of days.

"Pradipsinh Jadeja was operated for oral cancer by Dr Kaustubh Patel and team at HCG Cancer Centre, Ahmedabad. His condition is stable and he is recovering well. He will be kept in surgical ICU for two to three days," Dr Soma Bose, chief medical administrator at HCG, said in a medical bulletin released this morning.

Hospital officials said the surgery, which also involved plastic surgery procedure, took about seven hours. "Pradipsinh Jadeja was detected to have buccal mucosa cancer. He did not show any symptoms, and the cancer was detected for the first time. He will be kept in surgical ICU for two to three days, and will spend three or four more days in hospital under observation after that," Sandit Shah, HCG's Centre head, told reporters.

Shah said that Jadeja's condition is fine, and he even chatted with the doctors after his surgery. "We will be able to tell you more about the cancer once the biopsy report is available in a week," he added in response to a question about the stage of cancer Jadeja was diagnosed with.

Besides home, Jadeja, a four-term MLA, is minister of state for energy, law, and parliamentary affairs. He also holds independent charge of a number of other ministries, including police housing, border security, prohibition and excise, and NRG division.

Tobacco and alcohol use increase the risk of contracting buccal mucosa cancer. It is more common in men, and also occurs in women who use snuff. It is more likely to occur at 50 to 80 years or age.

WHAT ARE ITS SYMPTOMS?

There are no symptoms in the early stage. Later symptoms include white or red lump in the mouth that does not go away after two weeks; a red raised patch in the mouth that bleeds easily; a lump or thickening in the mouth; experiencing pain while eating or drinking; difficulty chewing or swallowing; severe ear pain; difficulty moving the jaw or tongue; hoarseness; numbness of the tongue or other areas of the mouth.
