The Gujarat High Court, on Friday, took cognizance of the poor state of infrastructure prevalent at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad and the hardships faced by citizens who throng the state-run health facility for treatment. The division bench of Acting Chief Justice AS Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav issued notice to the state government, superintendent of Civil Hospital, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation directing them to file their reply in the matter by April 24.

Following media reports, Justice JB Pardiwala had brought the issue to the notice of the Acting Chief Justice, who took cognizance on the issue and the high court constituted a suo-motu PIL in this regard. Notably, the court has expressed unhappiness over the shortage of ventilators as well as other allied infrastructure in the hospital, which is critical to take care of serious patients who are fighting their battle for life.

Notably, the new building, which was recently inaugurated, is devoid of ventilators in many departments. Also, the media report alleged that although there are ambulances in Civil Hospital, yet patients still have to face hardship in getting ambulances and in many cases, the same is not made available to them.

Meanwhile, a hospital source told DNA that the new building is yet to become fully operational and ventilator facilities are available in some of the departments housed in the new building. The next hearing of the case is scheduled on April 24. Counsel for state government said it will file a reply in the case clarifying the ground reality of the infrastructure available at the hospital and will submitted it to the court on the next hearing.
