The high court on Tuesday observed that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had no set parameters as far as construction of speed breakers and bumps on city roads were concerned. The court made this observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the poor condition of roads in the city following the monsoon.

The court also directed the civic body to carry out a survey of the close to 3000 bumps on various roads and remove the unauthorised speed breakers.

A division bench of the high court headed by justice MR Shah had during an earlier hearing sought to know from the department its rules and regulations pertaining to speed breakers as they seemed to be randomly made on the roads.

The court on Tuesday observed that speed breakers were being indiscriminately and often illegally put up on roads. The court also stated that it seemed the civic body had no regulations as far as speed bumps were concerned. The court pas posted further hearing in the matter on April 2.

It should be noted that during the hearing of the PIL, an Isanpur resident Reenaba Vaghela had written a letter to the court seeking action against AMC for its poorly constructed roads which led to her husband suffering an accident and ending up being paralysed for over five months. The court had later observed that the civic body should compensate the road accident victims who suffered due to the poor condition of roads. Earlier too on several occasions during the hearing of the PIL filed by one Mehendi Hussain saw both the civic body and the state government come under severe criticism from the high court for the poor condition of roads post monsoon. The court had in February also reprimanded the civic body for the stray cattle menace as well as the improper parking that lead to traffic chaos in the city.
