Gujarat HC asks AMC to put on record proposed action against its officers

Gujarat High Court has asked the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to file an affidavit stating what action it proposes to take against 26 officers for poor quality of roads, based on the vigilance report. It has also asked the corporation to file progress report on January 16, 2018.

The direction has come from the second division bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Biren Vaishnav on Wednesday, after corporation in its reply informed the court that it has issued 81 notices to officers. These roads had washed away in first rains of monsoon in this calendar year.

The bench is hearing public interest litigation filed by Mustaq Kadri. The court on earlier occasion had asked the civic bidy, whether it had taken or intended to take action against those officers responsible for approving the poor quality roads and clear bills of contractors who built them. The bench had also asked if the Corporation had asked its internal vigilance department to investigate nexus between contractors and officers and then submit the report to the court.

In its reply, corporation on Wednesday informed the court that it had issued 40 show cause notices to the seven Additional City Engineers, and 40 notices to deputy engineers asking them to respond why actions should not be taken against them.

The bench drew the attention of corporation's advocate Satyam Chhaya about patched roads along the Metro link project and asked the corporation to fully resurface the road.

Some 70 per cent roads had washed away in the monsoon. Corporation had taken random samples of 92 roads and sent them for laboratory testing to FSL, LD Engineering College.

The corporation also told the court that many roads had been either repaired or completely resurfaced.
