Individuals eligible for a 10 per cent reservation in government jobs under the economically backward class category have now been granted relaxation in age limit for five years, the Gujarat government has said.

The state on Friday issued a government resolution extending the age cap to 45 from existing 40 for government jobs for candidates applying under the EBC quota.

The implementation of the GR will be effective from January 14, said the GR. That means all recruitment advertisements by the government will have to implement the age limit of candidates eligible for the quota.

All the departments have been informed that in case the test is yet to be conducted for advertisements published before January 14, the new norm will be taken into consideration as per Friday's Government Resolution.

Gujarat was the first state to implement the new quota in jobs and education after it was cleared by Union Cabinet on January 7. The quota will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, the Centre had said.

Under the new quota, those who have an annual salary of less than Rs 8 lakh per year and possess less than 5 acres of land will be able to avail reservation in educational institutions and jobs.
