The Gujarat government has been mulling making drip irrigation compulsory in the state and moving ahead in this direction.

In line with this Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, on Thursday, said at a farmer's cooperative society gathering that his government is resolved to move all sugarcane crops onto 100% drip irrigation.

Rupani was speaking at gathering of farmers and representatives of cooperative sector of Gujarat held in Ahmedabad by Indian Farmers' Fertilisers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO).

He said, "We have resolved to divert sugarcane crops to 100% drip irrigation and we will encourage farmers for this. We will give assistance to farmers for that too. Besides this, crops such as paddy, banana and other, which consume more water will be based on drip irrigation. Gradually, we would insist for total diversification in the irrigation system by 2022."

"We experienced a water crisis this year and that is why it is the need of the hour. Israel is a small country in a desert area but the nation has accepted micro-irrigation that uses minimum water. Our farmers will have to match their steps with such nations by changing their mindsets too," Rupani added.

The state government has also taken the decision to make micro-irrigation compulsory in the state for farmers who receive water from Narmada and other schemes. The issue was discussed in the state government's Chintan Shibir held in June this year and the same will be implemented soon.

The CM added in his speech that he deliberately chose Israel for his first foreign tour as CM so that he could bring technology from there to Gujarat for farmers. He also said that Gujarat's farmers could achieve good results with experiments.

The chief minister also made a presentation on the state government's SKY scheme for farmers, which would allow them to generate solar power through installation of panels on their farms.

Former agriculture minister and chairman of cooperative marketing society, Dilip Sanghani, said that marginal farmers in Gujarat will be provided chemical fertilisers without any charge.
