The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in a recent report on Gujarat public sector undertakings(PSUs) categorised Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) as a loss-making unit. However, the Gujarat government has been milking this PSU for political gains and not repaying the PSU for the services they avail for political motives.

The government uses bus services provided by GSRTC to ferry people in the rural area for government functions to gather the crowd at different events. This is a common procedure and the department of government that is the main organiser of the event pays GSRTC for the service.

The government records show that they used maximum service of GSRTC in  2016-17 which was the year of assembly polls in state. The government had then held many rallies and programmes which were attended by either the PM or the representatives of state or central governments.

These records were presented by the transport minister in the form of replies asked by  Ajitsinh Chauhan, Congress MLA from Balasinor. The MLA had sought the details on services of GSRTC taken by the government, payments made and pending. The transport minister had filed a written reply putting the same on the records of the Gujarat assembly. The government had to pay Rs. 113.50 crore to GSRTC for its services in the last five years in which the government had to pay Rs. 51.11 crore for the services availed in the year 2016-17 which remained maximum in the period of five years.

In return, Gujarat government paid Rs. 91.17 crores including Rs. 36 crore paid in the year 2016-17. Now the government owe Rs. 22.33 crore to the GSRTC including Rs. 15.12 crore for the year 2016-17. The CAG had reported that GSRTC had incurred a loss of Rs 184 core in 2015-16 alone. The audit agency criticised the GSRTC for lower business in fact during the same period of five years.
