Gujarat government to help farmers set-up oil mills to crush groundnuts

The Gujarat government is mulling over helping farmers to set-up their own oil mills in order to salvage them from market flip-flops. The scheme will be announced soon and will have initiatives for value addition too.

Agriculture minister, RC Faldu, said, "We have decided this to salvage farmers from fluctuations in market prices for groundnuts. The government will come up with the scheme soon that will help farmers set up their oil mills or other value addition units. The farmers will run this mills on cooperative basis and the profit also will be further distributed among share-holding members of the society of farmers."

"This will also bring in elements of competition in the edible oil market and the existing oil millers will witness rivalry. This will, as an result, bring down prices of oils through breaking monopoly as the private millers dominate the market at present and the quality of oil also will improve due to this competition," Faldu added.

The government will go with the pattern of sugar mills run in south Gujarat wherein the farmers run the same through cooperative societies. The government has also studied the model of the same to implement it for groundnut growing farmers.

The minister further added, "Besides crushing groundnuts, we are also mulling to value addition in groundnuts. The farmers can make other products out of the nuts which are utilised in global consumer markets. There is a huge demand in other countries for groundnuts from Gujarat and through this way, it can be catered."

The state government has also got over 1.25 lakh farmers been registered for selling off their groundnuts at minimum support price(MSP). The government is paying Rs. 1000 per quintal to farmers under the MSP scheme and the registration process is going on. The purchase shall start from November 15 at 225 centers across the state.
