Gujarat government is preparing for a week-long drive against plastic pollution and that will begin from World Environment Day falling on June 5. The government and different local government bodies will sensitise citizens on pollution caused by plastic waste and the slogan of this drive shall remain ‘Beat the plastic pollution’. The government concluded month-long water conservation drive on Thursday.

State education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama and minister of state for environment department Jaydrathsinh Parmar briefed media persons in Gandhinagar on Saturday about the drive. The ministers said that the motive of the drive was to bring awareness on sanitation and plastic pollution both. Chudasama said, “Our PM Narendra Modi floated the slogan of Swachchh Bharat and we are following the same for the drive to launch from environment day. Plastic waste not only spread the litter but also creates the hazardous pollution as the same cannot be biodegraded. India is hosting the world level celebration of environment day this year and that is why we decided to do our bit by sensitising people on plastic waste pollution and recycling and reuse of plastics to prevent pollution.”

The government has decided to run this campaign in all the urban authorities, semi-urban bodies and villages. The sanitation staff will explain the citizens to segregate plastic waste and hand it over to waste collection unit for recycling. The plastic waste will be used as fuel for cement factories and other industries to burn in kilns. Parmar said, “The government has also decided to impose the fine over the citizens who dispose plastic waste haphazardly at open places creating pollution. We have roped in non-government organisations and social and religious institutions to sensitise people or contribute their bit to remove plastic wastes from the state. We will clean up roads, canals, drainage, public places, water tanks and ponds and remove plastic waste from there.”

The government will run special sanitation drive during the week starting from June 05 and run the campaign through different media. Those individuals or organisations who perform the best in the drive will be felicitated by the government on the concluding day.
