The Gujarat government has informed all liquor companies and distilleries to print the price on the brand label of liquor bottles. The government wrote to liquor companies to avoid disparity in prices of the same bottle from shop to shop. This had also affected the revenues which the government made through excise on liquor in the state.

The office of the controller of legal metrology and director of consumer affairs came to know through the raids that permit shops of liquor in Gujarat were overcharging the liquor permit holders when they purchased liquor. There was disparity in price from shop to shop and they would also charge more during times of festivals.

Sources in the government informed, "There is a nexus between permit holders and distilleries to evade the taxes. The manufacturers would never put the price on label and so, shops were charging consumers as per their own whims. The metrology department also fined several permit shops in lakhs of rupees for these irregularities and drew the attention of the home and excise department to the issue."

The home department then issued the advisory to liquor supplying companies in Gujarat that they would have to compulsorily print the price on labels. The department also passed the stricture to all permit shop holders not to sell the liquor bottles without the price label.

"We have asked all liquor shops to return such liquor bottles to concerned companies and they will have to maintain the register of the bottles sent back so that those do not reach the open market. The companies have also agreed to print the price on the bottle," said the excise department official.
