The state government has suspended the export of live animals and livestock from Tuna and Kandla ports in Kutch, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced on Friday.

The announcement came a couple of months after the Animal Welfare Board of India issued an advisory, asking states to take steps for implementation of provisions of law while export of livestock, including ruminants such as goat, sheep, among others, especially during their transport.

The CM told reporters that livestock export would not be allowed from the state till the standards prescribed by the Animal Welfare Board of India are fulfilled.

In a letter to commerce minister Suresh Prabhu, Rupani said the local certification granted by the state government has become meaningless in the wake of the new guidelines.

He requested that the permit to export live animals and livestock from Kandla port be suspended till quarantine station and certification facilities are made available.

Rupani said a 24x7 police check post was being set up at Tuna port to stop illegal export of animals. An official release said that the government has asked Society for Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals in all districts, especially Kutch, to ensure compliance with provisions of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Earlier, the Kutch collector Remya Mohan on August 06, had prohibited the Deendayal Port Trust to stop the export of 10000 sheep and goats immediately after some animal lovers approached her with the complaint of cruelty with animals.

The animals were to reach in Gulf before Bakr-Eid.

The exporters then had approached Gujarat high court and the court had stayed collectors order.

Meanwhile, the central government's shipping ministry also had revoked approval of vessels to export livestock to Gulf countries from Gujarat on several grounds.
