The Gujarat government announced schemes for economically backward students and youths from non-reserved categories on Friday, after formation of a commission for 58 such communities. The government has set the maximum annual income limit of Rs 3 lakh a year as eligibility criterion.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel addressed a press conference to talk about the features of the schemes for the non-reserved category communities.

The non-reserved classes commission had recommended a ceiling for the total annual income of the family at Rs 6 lakh a year.

"There are 58 such communities in the state and around 1.5 crore people belonging to that would benefit through these schemes. The poor people of this section did not get any benefits of reservation quotas, but these schemes would compensate for that and help them get best education and employment with the support of the government."

Patel, however, did not answer why the annual income of Rs 3 lakh was arrived at. But he said that the government decided the limit considering the criteria for other backward classes under different schemes.

The Educational Unreserved Educational and Economical Development Corporation chairman Babubhai Ghodasara said, "We had proposed a ceiling at a total annual income of Rs 6 lakh but it was a shot in the dark. The government reviewed the annual limits for schemes of different kinds and for different communities and decided this cap."

Besides the annual income limits, the government has set many other conditions for the eligible people to avail of the benefits.

However, those who wish to apply for the benefits would not have to visit any government bureau, as the application can be made online.

The benefits include Rs 20,000 as aid for students preparing for entrance exams like JEE and NEET.
