Gujarat government on Monday announced a compensation package for the six villages that were affected in Kevadia colony and the seven villages that will be submerged due to the Garudeshwar Weir. The Kevadia colony is near the Sardar Sarovar dam.

The state in a release said that the package will be given by the Narmada Water resources, water supply and Kalpsar department. The release said that the project affected who want the land for their land will be given the same while those who want cash compensation will be given the same.

The government said per head compensation will be Rs7.5 lakh per hectare. The state said that it was rethinking the 2013 and 2015 notification for compensation after several projects affected made a representation that they needed land for their lost land and not money. It clarified that all other components of the package will remain the same as the 2013 and 2015 notification. Meanwhile, activists who have been helping the affected seek better compensation dismissed it as a poll gimmick.

"We will believe it when a notification to the effect is issued. This is just an announcement. Similar announcements have been made in 2017 and 2014 before the elections but nothing has come out of it," said Anand Mazgaonkar.

He said one reason for announcing the same was also because one of the villages is where the inauguration ceremony of the Statue of Unity is to be held and the government fears that the tribals will disrupt the ceremony. He said the fasting by tribals to protest the lack of compensation will go on as planned for October 31. Some 70 villages in and around the Statue of Unity are likely to take part in the fast.
