The state government on Monday said that over 2 lakh households will be covered under the state's solar rooftop policy within a year which will help generate over 600 megawatt (Mw) of clean energy.

Speaking at a press conference, energy minister Saurabh Patel said with the solar rooftop policy of the state government, the common man can now become both a consumer as well as producer of clean energy.

"People can generate electricity through solar energy in their own balcony, rooftop or any open space owned by them and can also sell the generated energy to the state government," said Patel.

"The state will buy the surplus energy generated at a rate of Rs 2.25 per unit under a 25-year contract with the producers," said Patel.

Explaining the subsidy that will be provided by the state for households that generate their own solar energy, Patel said that the government will subsidize 40 per cent of the cost of a 3 kilowatt (KW) solar rooftop installation.

"An installation of more than 3 KW up to 10 KW will get 20 per cent subsidy," said Patel. This means a household that wants to install solar rooftop facility of 11 KW will get 40 per cent subsidy for the first 3 KW, 20 per cent subsidy for the rest 7 KW and no subsidy for the 1 KW.

He said that this year the state was targeting 2 lakh solar rooftop projects and 8 lakh in the next three years which will help generate 1,800 MW electricity.

It should be noted that the state has made a provision of Rs 10,00 crore in the budget for the subsidy scheme.

He also said that the chief minister's decision not to give permission to any new thermal power plants in the state was also to promote the use of renewable energy resources.

"With an installed capacity of 326.67 Mw up to March 31, 2019 the state leads others in the country in solar energy generation," said Patel.

He said that the agency that a customer chooses to setup the solar rooftop is under an obligation to maintain it for free in five years.
