Gujarat government has got the breather for power generation after the central government's approval for allotment of 19 million metric tonne coal for four years. The coal-based power station in Gujarat will be able to generate 4,000 KW electricity during this period after this approval.

"Central government has approved allocating more coal after we made representation in the recent meeting. Gujarat government will receive more coal now that could last for four years and we would be able to generate 4,000KW power through the same lot of coal. The Centre will also supply one more rack of coal to Gujarat through railway," state's energy minister Saurabh Patel said.

Patel was in New Delhi on Monday to attend the conference of energy ministers of the state with union minister Piyush Goyal. In this 'All India Power Ministers' conference', the approval was given under SHAKTI scheme of central government.

"We also made the representation before the union minister to provide more assistance to Gujarat for its Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY) launched recently for motivating farmers for solar power generation. The central government will provide the assistance under their KUSUM Yojana that has the same model," Patel added.

The energy minister said that Gujarat had agreed to sign a short-term agreement with coal-based power stations located near the coal mines but are nonfunctional.

"It is cost-effective to sign agreements with such power stations for power supply to Gujarat as coal transportation through railways takes time and money both. It takes eight days for ferrying one rack of coal to Gujarat. The power stations close to sources of coal can get the stock of coal instead of Gujarat, can become functional and sell power to Gujarat," the minister further added.

CURBING CRISIS

Gujarat was passing through a coal crisis as many of the power stations could not operate due to unavailability of the material. The state government was forced to purchase 60 million units every day from the national grid.
