At its fag end, monsoon this year seems to have regained its spent fury, forcing the government machinery to re-employ all its monsoon preparedness drills in 3 days of heavy downpour.
Thousands of people have been evacuated in the worst-affected Bharuch, Vadodara, Navsari and Surat districts. So far, 12,000 people were evacuated from Bharuch in the last two days, while some 20,000 people had to be evacuated in Vadodara district.
Vadodara city alone received 232mm of rain in the last 24 hours.
Some 6000-odd people were evacuated in Navsari district too.
The situation was really bad in Bharuch and Vadodara with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel rushing in to rescue 200 Bharuch people marooned in floods. “Around 200 people were rescued from Bharuch. Two teams are being stationed at Bharuch and Surat while one each has been sent to Vadodara and Navsari. Food packets are also being distributed,” said RS Joon, commandant sixth battalion, NDRF.
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad woke up to another cloudy day on Tuesday with intermittent showers drenching residents throughout the day. In all, the city received an average of 10 mm of rain between 10 am and 4 pm. The resultant water-logging in several low-lying areas led to traffic jams.
One person was injured in Sabarmati area after part of a tree fell on him. Across the city the new-west zone recorded the highest rainfall of 21mm. Elsewhere in the state, Quant taluka in Chotta Udepur recorded the maximum rainfall of 425mm of rainfall.
Be rain prepared even today!
The Met department has predicted intermittent but heavy rainfall for the city on Wednesday. It has also warned of heavy rain in almost all parts of Gujarat, particularly Saurashtra.
