According to the data released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) on Thursday, Gujarat ranks fifth in crime rate against those belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) category in 2016. While Madhya Pradesh topped the list, Rajasthan, Goa, Bihar and Gujarat followed closely.
The data states 40,801 cases were lodged under (Prevention of Atrocities) Act across the country in 2016. Out of which 1,322 cases were lodged with Gujarat police. The number of such cases shot up in Gujarat as compared to the last two years. It was 1,010 cases in Gujarat in 2015 and 1,094 cases in 2014.
Out of the 1,322 cases that were lodged in Gujarat, 32 cases were related to murder, 35 cases of attempt to murder, 64 cases causing grievously hurt, 75 cases of assault on Schedule Caste women, 36 cases of sexual harassment, 57 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 70 cases of rape, 99 cases of rioting, 16 cases of robbery, 11 cases of arson, 688 cases of other IPC crimes and 165 cases related to other incidents, the data said.
