Amid demands to grant 33% reservation for women in the Assembly and the Parliamentary elections, women continue to get the cold shoulder from political parties. The number of women fielded by the two key parties for the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat has fallen sharply and is the lowest since 2007.

The BJP has named 12 women among its 182 candidates, and the Congress 10.

The number is sharply lower than in 2012, when BJP had fielded 19 women candidates, including Anandiben Patel, who later went on to become Chief Minister. Eleven other women candidates fielded by the BJP had also won the polls. Congress had fielded 14 women in 2012, of whom four had emerged the winner.

Similarly, in the 2007 Assembly elections, BJP had named 22 women among its candidates, of whom 15 had won. Congress, on the other hand, had 14 women candidates in the fray in 2007, of whom only one had won.

In 2002 elections, which were held a few months after the post-Godhra riots, the BJP had fielded 12 women candidates, and the Congress nine.
