Taking a dig at two main political parties in the country, Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav on Thursday said that any government who plays with farmers' demands will be shown the doors. “Farmers will be the real winners in Gujarat assembly election. The trend will begin from Gujarat as BJP has broken the record of NDA-regime of being anti-farmer. Congress is not valid for votes but due to people's anger with the BJP, Congress will benefit out of it.”

Addressing the media on three core issues, Yadav said, “While the overall growth rate of Gujarat is better but it has failed immensely in terms of agricultural credit. In Gujarat, the agricultural growth in past five years has been only 1.6%. Farmers have suffered major losses in just two commodities, specifically cotton and groundnut produced here. While the guaranteed price for both is nearly Rs 4,500 but the groundnut is being sold at Rs 3,000 to 3,200 and cotton Rs 3,500 to 3,600 per quintal. Because of this, farmers have borne losses of Rs 9,895 crore in just one season.”

Speaking about false claims on irrigation issue, Yadav said, “It is shocking that the fabled Gujarat model does not have an agriculture policy document which clearly shows the priority BJP gives to the largest section of voters of Gujarat. The long-standing promise of irrigation from Narmada project has not been realized, out of 18 lakh hectares only 3 lakh hectares have received water.

While not delivering irrigation water, the BJP government has enforced power cut for agriculture from 8 to 10 hours, that too alternatively on day light and night hours. The insensitivity and lack of understanding of agrarian issues by the BJP government and the centre and the state was exposed when demonetisation was announced at a most inappropriate time – the start of Kharif marketing season in 2016 and due to this there was all round crash in prices of agri-products and perishables. The surgical strike of central government impacted the farmers of Gujarat most as huge stocks of tomatoes traditionally exported to Pakistan were blocked and were sold at throw away rates. I am not against foreign policy but at least compensate for the losses of the farmers.”

Ajit Jha, General Secretary of Swaraj India said, “Voice of farmers has to be heard by elected governments if they wish to survive in power. We see the Gujarat election as a test of the farmers vote and a taste by the government of the power of that vote.”

Speaking about supporting Jignesh Mewani contesting from Vadgam, Yadav said, “We are here to see uprising of a historical change, that will bring in the voice of the farmers in the mainstream of Indian politics. We have shown our support to Mewani because we can see strength and honesty in him.”
