Gujarat elections 2017: 'Dhandha manda hai', cry campaign material makers ahead of second phase

Elections in India are marked by hectic campaigning, rallies, posters and hoardings which add colour and lift spirits of not just party workers but the voters. But those who are in the business of election-related material that DNA talked to say 'Dhandha manda hai' meaning the business is low this year.

For Gulshan Khurana of New Delhi it is not just a seasonal business but a family one. The manufacturer-cum-seller, has visited 23 states for general, Assembly and local elections in last 50 years, has been in Ahmedabad for last three weeks now.

"Selling of material is down at 70% compared to the last time I was here in 2012. Though people come to see pens, stickers, scarves, caps, t-shirts, bands and flags, they are not interested in buying these for voters. Generally, candidates or their supporters approach as soon as they file nomination," he said. Khurana said the business is much lower than he had expected.

Ahmedabad-based manufacturer, Hussain Shaikh is selling the items for the first time in retail. "This time hardly any retailer approached me to buy campaigning material as compared to the last 15 years. Dhandha Manda Hai." A Congress worker from Kheralu of Mehsana district, who arrived at the shop, said, "Fund is one of the factors for both the party and the candidate. Its cash crunch this time. I am here to buy flags and caps."
