A total of 851 candidates are left in the fray for the 93 seats that will go to polls in the second phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections on December 14, official sources said.

A total of 1,664 nominations were filed for these seats, but the number has come down to almost half after scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations.

An analysis of the list for the second phase of elections shows there are 34 candidates in the fray from Mehsana, by far the highest among all seats. Deputy chief minister Nitin Patel is contesting on a BJP ticket from Mehsana. It is followed by Viramgam seat, from where 22 candidates are contesting.

Radhanpur, with 17 in the fray, has the third highest number of candidates.

Sixteen candidates each are contesting from Vatva, Bapunagar and Dhandhuka assembly segments in Ahmedabad, while 14 are in the fray in Palanpur, Chanasma, Becharaji, Vijapur, Sanand and Nikol seats. Thirteen candidates are contesting from Siddhpur, Ghatlodia and Dholka seats.

Interestingly, the tribal reserved seat of Jhalod in Dahod district has the lowest number of two candidates in the fray — BJP's Mahesh Bhuriya and Congress's Bhavesh Katara.

Three candidates are left in the fray from Anand and Morva Hadaf (ST), and four each in Deodar, Bayad, Kankrej, Shehra, Halol, Chhota Udepur (ST) and Mehmedabad assembly seats.

In the first phase, 977 candidates are in the fray for 89 seats, which means a total of 1,828 candidates are contesting in both phases of the Assembly elections. This is the second highest number of candidates after 1995, when 2,545 candidates contested. The number of candidates was 1,666 in the 2012 Assembly elections.
