A ruckus ensued in the House after BJP and Congress MLAs began shouting at each other over a question by Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani.

Mevani had, in connection with a question on land acquisition for bullet train, had sought to know from Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel why the state was forcibly acquiring land from the farmers.

Earlier several MLAs had also said that the government was not paying the farmer's market rate for the land and instead was paying them as per the jantri rates. The jantri rates were much lower than the market rate.

Mevani, who raised his hand to put forth a question to Patel, said that during a visit to Nalasopara in Maharashtra farmers there had categorically refused to give land for the bullet train project. He said several farmers from Gujarat had also joined the protest.

An annoyed Patel said that several people in the state with anti development, anti-Gujarat and anti-people mindset, were bent upon ensuring that projects that benefited the masses and were a matter of pride for the state, did not materialise.

He said that the project will ensure that the travelling time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad was reduced considerably.

He also compared Mevani to Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar who created hurdles in the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Project.

He also questioned the Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani to know if the Congress was supporting the objections to a project that benefited people. An enraged Mevani rushed to the well of the House and shouted that those who raised concerns of the farmers were not anti-nationals but those who hid detail of the Rafale deal were the true anti nationals. Later, talking to media persons he also sought the resignation of Patel.

Mevani's comments were not taken on record in the House.
