Gujarat Police has been put on alert after seven members of the outlawed SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India) fled from the Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh. They broke the wall of the toilet in the wee hours of Tuesday and escaped after stabbing two policemen, looting their rifles and snatching wireless sets.

One of them, Abid Mirza, was caught within a few hours following a massive manhunt following the sensational jailbreak. The other six are Abu Faisal, Mehboob aka Guddu Shaikh, Zaqir Hussain, Amjad Khan, Aslam Ayyub and Mohammad Ejazuddin.

The seven were nabbed by the MP Police in 2010 for allegedly killing a policeman, a bank manager and an advocate in Khandwa in 2009.

Though they escaped in MP, the prison break has raised the eyebrows of the Gujarat police, too. They are particularly concerned about two most fanatic SIMI members involved in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts.

Investigation revealed that Faisal and Mehboob were actively involved in the 2008 blasts. They were also brought to the city by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) earlier to probe their roles in the serial blasts.

However, they were sent back to Khandwa prison as the MP Police needed them to investigate the murders committed by them in 2009. According to DCB sources, Mehboob attended the terror camps organised by the Indian Mujahideen in Vaghemon, Kerala.

He is considered to be one of the key operatives of SIMI and IM.

Similarly, Faisal was also an active member of SIMI. He is infamous for his hard-core fanaticism and short temper.

Since he and Mehboob are at large, Gujarat police have been put on alert as they can revive their terror modules in the state after entering here via border districts.

State director general of police in-charge Pramod Kumar has ordered police chiefs of all the districts to remain alert.

“We are taking the issue very seriously owing to their connection with Gujarat. I have asked all the superintendents of police (SPs) of the bordering districts to keep a close watch. We have also alerted other major cities to stand vigil,” said Kumar.
