Chances for compromise between ruling BJP and opposition Congress in Gujarat assembly have slimmed after the opposition decided on Friday that it would approach the governor on the issue of suspension of three of its members. The business advisory committee will meet on Monday and decide a date for voting on the no-confidence motion brought by the opposition against Speaker Rajendra Trivedi. The motion is likely to be put up for voting on March 28, the last day of the budget session.

Opposition leader Paresh Dhanani, talking to media persons on Friday, said, “We do not want to compromise now as the ruling party does not wish that suspension of our three members is limited to this term only. That is the rule as per the Constitution. Our members are at fault but the punishment should be as per the rules.”

He further said: “If we agree to their terms, we will be sending the message that the Speaker can take decisions in future without regard for rules, and that is not possible. We are going to meet the Governor on Monday and will seek his intervention.”

“If the Speaker wishes to form a new rule for the Assembly, the House should pass it after voting on it, and that was not done in this case. I have studied the Constitution deeply during these days as well as court orders in different cases of suspension of members of the house. All of them indicate that Speaker Trivedi has gone beyond the rule,” Dhanani said.

The leader of the opposition said they knew the motion of no-confidence would not pass in the House as they did not have a majority, but they wanted to express their disappointment and disagreement with the Speaker through the same medium.
