Senior Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil demanded a Supreme Court-monitored judicial probe into the multi-crore Bitcoin scam on Thursday. BJP leader and former MLA Nalin Kotadiya is an accused in the case and has been declared an offender.

The bitcoin scam, pegged at Rs1,500 crore, came to light following a complaint to Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja by Shailesh Bhatt after an Amreli police personnel extorted Rs10 crore worth of bitcoins and Rs 32 crore in cash from him. The complaint led to the arrest of Amreli SP Jagdish Patel, PI Anant Patel, and others; Kotadiya's involvement was established shortly.

In another twist in the tale, police later found out that the victim Shailesh Bhatt had extorted Rs 155 crore, including Rs 140 crore worth of bitcoins from an employee of crypto currency firm Bitconnect, before he was stung by the police. He was also booked by police, but is still absconding.

Gohil, who is also national spokesperson of the Congress, said several top BJP leaders are suspected to be part of this crypto currency scam. He alleged that Jadeja has deep links with Kotadiya, who has been untraceable for almost two months now. The former MLA was declared an offender by a court on June 18.

"Nalin Kotadiya is absconding, but in a video, he has said that if he is arrested, he will reveal damning evidence, which would expose top BJP leaders who had converted black money to white during demonetisation. Now, who are these BJP leaders?" Gohil asked.

The Congress leader alleged that the CID, Crime, was trying to pressure the witnesses in the case. He also questioned why central agencies such as CBI or ED were not investigating the scam.

GOVT REBUTS

The state government denied Gohil’s charges, and accused him of spreading lies to defame the police. The state government has taken action against all the accused, they stated in their defence.
