Congress MLA from Dhrangadhra-Halwad constituency, Parsottam Sabariya, was arrested by Morbi police Saturday late evening. Sabariya and his acquaintance, Bharat Gadeshiya, a lawyer, were arrested because of alleged links to corruption in construction work of irrigation scheme, said Morbi district superintendent of police (SP) Karan Raj Vaghela on Sunday.
He said that both of them were arrested at 2:00 pm.
"The MLA had demanded Rs40 lakh from people involved in scam for not raising the issue in assembly or to seek police investigation in corruption of construction work. They had demanded Rs. 40 lakh, but consented upon Rs35 lakh bribe. Initially, Sabariya had received Rs10 lakh in installments and rest Rs25 lakh through cheque. Investigation has revealed the payment record and, hence, Sabariya and Gadeshiya were arrested," Vaghela said.
"The government had sanctioned Rs20.31 crore for some 334 works under minor irrigation scheme in Morbi district. out of this, irregularity of Rs1.12 crore was reported in 46 works. The chief engineer and additional secretary for quality and control in irrigation department of Gujarat government had investigated in the issue," Vaghela added.
Earlier, on September 14, Sabariya had written to Superintending Engineer in Rajkot to ignore the complaint made by Sarpanch and other political office bearers regarding irregularities in construction of check dams, small canals and percolation tanks. He had also mentioned that he had checked the quality of work and that was satisfactory.
Morbi A-division police station had arrested four people, including executive engineer CD Kanani after a complaint was filed by the official of the irrigation department.
The technical investigation in rest of 283 irrigation contract work was underway, Vaghela further informed the media persons here.
