Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani, who began his three-day fast demanding a judicial probe in the alleged groundnut procurement scam today, called off the protest after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's passing away.
Dhanani sat on the 72-hour fast outside Gandhi Ashram at around 9:00 in the morning.
"I am starting my fast after taking Mahatma Gandhi's blessings. My protest is to ensure that the truth in the Rs4,000 crore groundnut procurement scam comes out, which will happen only if a judicial probe in conducted," the Congress leader told reporters.
State Congress president Amit Chavda was among the host of party leaders present at the fast venue. However, minutes after Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away at the age of 93, Dhanani announced that the fast was being postponed as a mark of respect for the former prime minister.
"Vajpayee ji was a leader who did not hesitate from teaching Raj Dharma to a leader of his own party. His passing away has left a huge void in Indian politics," Dhanani said. The Opposition Congress has been alleging widespread irregularities and massive corruption. in groundnut procurement. The party is pressing for a judicial probe in the case alleging that only small fish had been arrested so far, while masterminds of the multi-crore rupee scam had not been touched.
The Opposition has been trying to build pressure on the government over the issue from some time, especially after groundnut stock mixed with stones and mud were busted in a warehouse of Rajkot last month. The groundnut was procured by NAFED.
