Congress party is now mobilizing unorganized workers to revive its fortune in urban areas. After launching Gujarat unit of All India Unorganized Workers Congress (AIUWC) in February, the new body wants to spread it's wings across the state. The move, the party says, will not only give unorganized workers a voice, it will also strengthen the party in urban areas, its Achilles Heel in Gujarat.

According to party estimates, there are close to two crore unorganized workers in the state, of which over half of them are in cities and towns. The party had on Sunday, held a meeting of Regional Executive in Ahmedabad which was attended by representatives of construction labourers, diamond workers, street vendors, unorganized women workers, and auto rickshaw drivers among others. The party had, in February, appointed two vice chairman, who will work in North Gujarat and South Gujarat. Now it is also focussing on Kutch and other parts of the state. It is also appointing presidents in different districts. It will then be expanded up to talukas. In the first week of May, it will organize a meeting in Kutch.

"The plan is to organize a meeting of executive committee every month. While India liberalised its economy in 1991, the fruits have not yet trickled down to workers. This is the very idea behind the formation of AIUWC," said Ashok Punjabi, chairman of AIUWC in Gujarat. The meeting on Sunday was chaired by the newly appointed president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), Amit Chavda and attended by former GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia and president of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) in Gujarat, Naishadh Desai. According to estimates, there are close to two crore workers in unorganized sector in Gujarat.
