Communal tension has been prevailing after the killing of a Patel youth allegedly by Muslims

Communal tension in Kalol town of Gandhinagar district remained intense on Tuesday. Stone pelting at Tower Chawk area was reported in the town in the morning. The Patel community closed all business for the day and almost all establishments remained locked on a second consecutive day. Communal tension has been prevailing after the killing of a Patel youth allegedly by Muslim community members.
Several commercial establishments in minority areas were functioning on Tuesday morning, which Patel community members tried to close forcefully that resulted in clash and stone pelting from both the sides. The police deployed two companies of state reserved police (SRP) and police teams of special operation group, local crime branch, Kalol town police station, Kalol rural police station and Mansa police station have been deputed. A media person was injured in the stone pelting incident.
District collector SK Langa said, "Situation is tense but under control. We have been trying to normalise the tension. We will not tolerate any violence victimising innocent people."
Meanwhile, victim Ashok Patel's son Sunil threatened the police to commit self immolation, if all the seven accused persons were not arrested by 4 pm on Tuesday. As one of the accused remained out of the reach of police, Sunil tried to immolate himself but his effort was foiled by the local police and he was detained.
Kalol Civil Hospital authorities asked relatives of the victim to take the body to Gandhinagar civil hospital as the facility of cold room was not available at Kalol. The relatives, however, are not ready to take the body for cremation, until all the accused persons are arrested.
