Japan could be Chief minister Vijay Rupani's next foreign trip. He might make the trip after Vibrant Gujarat Summit and develop strategic partnership with Japan. It is also possible that he can visit China, but the preference is Japan.

The aim for the state is to take the political relationship between the two countries to the next level, said the sources in Gujarat government.

"CM Rupani is more keen to visit Japan as many infrastructure-related projects in Gujarat are funded by JETRO of Japan and the Japanese investors have made huge investments here. The state's next move is to make Kalpsar project possible with the cooperation from Japan. Therefore, the CM prefers Japan to China," sources said.

"His predecessor Anandiben Patel had visited China in 2015, while Narendra Modi as CM also visited the foreign country in 2012. It has been a long period since the Gujarat CM visited Japan," he said.

"The Chief Minister can select either of the two countries, Japan or China, for his next trip. This visit will happen only after Vibrant Gujarat Summit as the CM's visit is not limited upto investment only but is also a symbolisation of strategic partnership between two entities," the Secretary to CM, Ashwani Kumar, said.

"It is not like foreign nations treat Gujarat as just one state of India, but reckon with a developed economy. Therefore, we get special treatment when we to a foreign country. This indicates that Gujarat government thinks beyond investment," Ashwani Kumar added. A committee is going to review the developmental outcome of his visit to Israel last week. "Basic thrust will be on agriculture, technology, water management and defense sector in which Israel is excelling. The committee will assess how the visit could help these sectors to grow in Gujarat," he further added.
